These 2 words saved me YEARS of frustration
Everyone says that you should be “authentic,” but what do they really mean by this? Luckily, I’ve got the perfect anecdote to make it crystal clear.
The Jack Lemmon Lesson
In 1953, a young Jack Lemmon arrived in Hollywood to film It Should Happen To You alongside Judy Holliday.
During one of the rehearsals, the legendary director George Cukor cut Lemmon in the middle of a scene and told him:
“Jack, do less.”
Lemmon realized he was overacting, apologized, and tried again.
He was promptly cut short. “Do less,” the director said again.
The actor obliged and repeated the scene, only to be stopped once more with the same two words.
This happened so many times that Lemmon finally snapped and almost shouted: “Mr. Cukor, if I do less than this, I’d be doing nothing!”
Cukor smiled broadly and replied: “Now you get it, Jack!”
